What is a Dental Veneer?

Veneers are thin, durable shells made from tooth-coloured porcelain that is made to match the translucency of natural teeth. These shells are custom made in a dental lab to match the shape and shade you’re looking for.

At Portrait Dental in Toronto, our dentists use veneers to enhance and even out your smile by addressing concerns like worn, crooked, or discoloured teeth. They’re also a great option for minimizing gaps between teeth and adjusting their size for a more balanced smile. Because of their versatility, veneers are a popular option in cosmetic dentistry.

If you are looking to alter the appearance of individual teeth or improve the overall evenness of your smile, you may want to consider dental veneers as a less intrusive alternative to dental crowns.

Lumineers®

At Portrait Dental, we offer Lumineers to our patients. Lumineers are a type of ultra-thin veneer designed to enhance your smile with minimal alteration to your natural teeth.

The Process of Getting Veneers

When you decide to get veneers, your dentist will usually start the process by gently reshaping your teeth to make sure the veneers fit in your mouth perfectly and don't take up more space than your natural teeth did. After that, they’ll take an impression of your teeth which is sent off to a dental lab to create your custom veneers.

Once your veneers are ready, your dentist will carefully bond them to the front of your natural teeth using dental cement and a curing light. Each veneer is specially crafted to match your desired shape and size. When your veneers are on, you should be left with a beautiful, confident smile that blends seamlessly with your existing teeth.

Caring for Veneers

Taking good care of your veneers is key to keeping your smile looking its best for years to come. Treat them much like your natural teeth by brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive toothpaste to avoid scratching the surface. Floss daily to keep the gums around your veneers healthy and prevent plaque buildup.

It’s also a good idea to avoid biting into very hard foods or objects, like ice or pens, which could chip or damage your veneers. While veneers are resistant to stains, do your best to limit foods and drinks like coffee and red wine, and avoid consuming tobacco to help maintain their brightness. With the right care, your veneers can keep your smile looking beautiful and natural for many years.
